who do we blame for the continued spread of this pandemic: the arrogant anti-vaxxers?!!

The title is from a view that I didn’t originally come up with but one that I nevertheless agree full-heartedly with. It actually comes from the statement by the Republican Governor of Alabama. Looking around at her state and the health crisis that still continues, however, she came to the only conclusion that any reasonable person could come to. Something like 38 percent of her citizens have wisely gotten the covid-19 vaccine and are healthy. However, there is a huge group that refuses to either get the vaccine or even practice social distancing or wearing masks.

She, rightly, places the blame for the continued spread of this virus on those who refuse to listen to reason and common sense and accept the vaccine available to help ward off this pandemic. And by the way, whether she said it or not, is allowing new mutations of that dread virus that very likely at some point is going to result in a variant that will be beyond the ability of the current vaccine.

At that point, as far as I am concerned, the so-called careless, if not cruelly selfish anti-vaxxers will be responsible for a new round of death in this country and around the world. We had a large number of people that got polio and got rid of that disease with a vaccine. The same holds true for many other diseases. Many of the same people that refuse to get this vaccine, likely benefited from those vaccines, but are too stubborn to do what is in the best interest of the entire society and take the precautions to stop this dread disease.

And what do the anti-vaxxers have to say for themselves? There may be some that are simply frightened because of all the rumors spread. However, there are people that should know better that are STILL not listening to reason because they don’t want to hear it. Their only real response is that in the United States, we have freedom of choice. Sadly, that so-called freedom, in this case, may simply mean that they are holding on to a vaunted right that will result in many more deaths than there have to be. There is some question in my mind about what kind of freedom it is that allows one to infect and possibly result in the death of your neighbors.

We all know the story of Typhoid Mary, who managed to spread that disease and kill how knows how many people. We rightly consider her a villain. Well, in this case, substitute the rampant anti-vaxxers and replace typhoid Mary with them, and we have a sadly accurate picture of what is going on right now in this country and some other places around the world.
