Summit in defense of democracy — -right on time

Some time ago, Biden announced that he was heading up a summit to discuss democracy and how it can thrive going forward. There doesn’t seem to have been a lot of publicity around this, or I have missed it. Either way, I was surprised to realize that is scheduled to start tomorrow, December 8th, 2021.
Below, you will find three links. The first one is the announcement on the Department of State webpage. The second is somebody at politico with an opinion that there are issues around this whole thing since, in his opinion, it is hard to know which country is clearly enough a democracy to participate. Personally, I think that is an easy decision if it ain’t a democracy, take for example Russia, it wouldn’t be included. However, that does not address the point that people from those countries might very well benefit from being a part of the summit, so I buy some of his logic in saying that maybe more work should be done with existing pro-democracy agents on the world stage. Finally, the third link is a list of the workshops, meetings, and panels that are going to be involved and when those events will take place.
For three days, it looks like a pretty busy schedule. It also includes many aspects of present and future plans and interests. There will be a young people’s discussion, as well as one that will focus on business and how that interacts with the democratic process in government.
If this forum was to ever be conducted, now is an excellent time. We are at a crossroads in society. Many nations seem to be turning toward authoritarian governments, including the efforts of those that followed the person that was in the White House before Biden managed to win the election and get him out of office. I had lots of concerns about the future of our country and with one entire party in thrall to a man that I believe totally is another rendition of Nazi Germany and Hitler, I still do have those existing concerns. If they ever regain control of the government, our democratic republic may be no more. They almost destroyed it during his reign. We might not be able to save it a second time, what with the so-called “white nationalists” (the same old people that were once called White Supremacists just dressed in casual clothes) being his main supporters.
I, for one, look forward to seeing the results from this summit and greatly appreciate and applaud, not just Biden in calling for it, but also the logic behind it.
