house bill 1 and not hating the player but definitely hating the game
Nobody suffers under any misunderstanding about how I feel about the current administration. In fact I have been more than clear in expressing my belief that the current administration in the White house is actually the opposite of what we need to fully come into the reality matching the philosophy that we claim to believe in. In fact, we are moving in the precisely opposite direction…away from care and concern for all to more exclusion uplifting of the rich and powerful at the detriment of minorities and the poor and working class.
However, friends have encouraged me to look at things from a slightly different perspective. Instead of railing against the players, rail against the game itself. Instead of protesting and denouncing trump and his, anti people, game, denounce the fact that we have allowed our country to go down a road where someone like trump was almost guaranteed.
Citizens United stands out as being one of the death knells in true equality for citizenry in this country. Why? Because ultimately it ruled that corporations could buy the government they could afford for their interests instead of the interests of the nation. That ruling allowed the lie that corporations, artificial constructs created to keep people from losing all their money on investments in companies they formed, have the right to speak as though they are human beings. They are not.
The effect of that is that corporations are in a position to BUY elections. And often, they do so without it being known that they are doing so nor what the real reason is via the use of super-pacs. Now, the corporations can’t be blsmed under the rule of “hate the game, not the player” but it instead puts the onus on we the people to stop this horrific game from being the one being played.
In another issue, trump has played the game available. The game, in this case, is that there is no actual law requiring someone running for the office of President to release their tax returns. Thus far, it has been a “word of honor” type thing that in fact those tax returns to be released and “everybody” did it.
Of course, as usual, when things not coded into law, someone is going to come along and break that widely understood agreement. It is not hard to see that a person like trump, who is used to writing his own set of rules, including rules on things like simply honesty, would eventually come along and refuse to play the game fairly.
Well, House Bill I, submitted on March 12, 2019, is the House moving to stop this and clarity the game so thst all Americans can have a level playing field and know that even the person in the White House has to play fairly and honestly.
It protects the right of ALL to vote, even going as far as moving that election day be a holiday to encourage more to vote. It also would require that all persons running for President would have to release the last ten yesrs of tax returns in order to qualify.
Now this bill was written by the Democrats in the House. The republicans in the House and likely the Senate will fight such a common sense bill, but then the game right now is “reject anything, no matter how it might help us all” if the other side of the aisle proposes it.
And of course, it is to be expected that those politicians that are in the employ of the big corporations will fight to reject this bill. After all that would cut off one of their largest resources for money via either direct pay offs or “campaign contributions”.
Yet, every body, regardless of whether they consider themselves liberal or conservative, it would seem to me, would want to make sure that there was some basis for hoping that the person we elect will actually work on our behave. The way things are now, it is just as if not more likely, that they are working for an interest group or corporation that we don’t even know about…..or even for a foreign government.
So, House Bill I…good start and another reason to be happy by the results of the midterms in 2016. Historically, it might just be remembered as a game changer…and oh boy does the game need to be changed.
