DANGER, DANGER….we are drifting toward a dictatorship under trump
Amazng, I found this article recently that was actually published in March of 2016. It was likely the first warning shot that we pretty much all missed about the dangers of a trump adminitration getting in power. Now, I am exampling where we are today and how far down that road we have come.
Arrogance and complacentcy about the United States being “exceptional” will not protect us. Now will the assumption that the United States has come too far along the path of equality for all and decency to all doesn’t save us either. The point is that we have seen a upturn in bigotry and nastiness being expressed around the couontry with just two and a half years of this man’s being in the White House,. That is NOT a coincidence.
We still have at least some of the judges willing to stand against his dictatorial ways, as well as the democrstic party, and even occasionally a republican or two will even stand up to his attempts at dictatorship. The question is how much more will he get away with in the two or six years than he has in the last two and a half. We all need to do everythign we can to keep this madman from getting re-elected. And the House needs to continue their investigation to try and mount up the already huge list of pieces of evidence.
“ Get his people into the bureaucracy, either as recess appointments or as “advisers” who don’t need Senate approval. If he refuses to appoint moderates demanded by the Senate, his advisers may be able to persuade civil servants to implement Trumpian policies but maybe not.”
Now this one has already been done. Witness how he managed to get rid of Jess Sessions becuase Sessions did the right thing, reclused himself and Rodenstein did his job and appointed an independent investigstion. It took a while but he managed to get a man who agreed with him in that place with Barr.
Use his personal funds to sue his political opponents, and persuade law enforcement to audit, monitor, and investigate them, as discussed above.
To my knowledge, he hasn’t done this one yet…not wiling to let go of his wealth. In fact he is actually profitting from using his businesses for political functions.
Impound funds appropriated by Congress and use them for projects like expelling illegal immigrants. This is technically illegal, but presidents have for decades denied the constitutionality of the anti-impoundment statute, and Trump’s lawyers could repeat these arguments.
Already tried this one. It is still in the hands of the legal system via lawsuits. But he has certainly attempted to take money appropiated by congress and use them for his favorite self-aggrandizing memorial to his ego…the border wall.
Build political support by declining to enforce unpopular laws, for example, the land-use and environmental laws that are so unpopular in the West. He can cite Obama’s immigration enforcement actions as precedent if needbe. He can exclude Muslims, at least temporarily, if he wants to.
Do I even need to say anything. His destruction of regulations that were set up to keep the nation cleaner and more livable. His leaving the Paris Accord. What more do I need to say on this one.
Focus on foreign affairs, where he has a freer hand. He can threaten to withdraw military and economic aid to Mexico unless it pays for the wall. He will give the military maximum support. The military is the most trusted public institution; if he can bring it to his side, he will obtain credibility from the wavering middle.
This one is also virtually self explanatory. Look at his threats of tariffs against China, Mexico. Look at his destruction, without input from Congress, by the way, of NATO as a whole. An actual that every single time made it worse for industries of various sorts in this country as well as abroad.
A quick read will show that on every one of five measures, trump has made some inroads and seems to be getting away with it because the republicans in the Senate are complicit in allowing it. The Democrats in the Housse are fighting a good fight, but are unsure of what exactly to do. This is especially true considering the fact that trump is trying to stop all efforts to investigate where his money is coming from…whatever money he has.
The fact is, we have reason to believe that, with his veneration of dictators like Putin and Kim Jung Un and his attacks on Merkel and Macron, our erstwhile friends, he is beholden in some way to those foreign dictatorial powers.
People, including the Republicans who so far has not only been asleep but complicit in his attacks on democratic rule, ie his attempts at dictator type behavior, need to wake up and make sure this man is not re-elected in 2020 or our nation will have lost every bit of higher moral ground that it ever had, or pretended to have.
We will also likely keep moving in the direction we have been for the last two and a half years and be another one of those countries known as a third world dictatorship
So WAKE UP AND RESIST!!!!
