Another retiring Republican warns of the evil of trumpism

I had not really focused on the name Anthony Gonzalez until today, but I found out he is one of the last republicans with a backbone who is willing to stand up against Trump and trumpism. My first reaction upon reading that he was retiring was to complain that the only republicans with a backbone are those retiring. That is not exactly true, since we have Cheney and Kinzinger standing proud against the former crook-in-chief.

However, it is true that most of those standing up against the corruption of the trump regime are retiring or retired. However, Gonzalez has stood against the trump program on other issues that will help the American people. He is one of those that voted to impeach and just yesterday he followed that up by voting for the 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill because it would include needed funds for his state as well as many others.

In this case, he and several other republicans’ votes actually made that bill pass because some democrats were trying to hold it to be voted on with the formerly 3.5 trillion dollar people supporting the bill. I understand WHY they would do that, but am still glad we got the 1.2 trillion for infrastructure.

So what did he say about trump and trumpism? He warned that Trump will try to steal the election following up on the tactics he used to ferment the insurrection of 2020. He said that was a horrible attempt to undermine the government and has been part of a family that fled Cuba because of such an overthrowing of the government by Castro, he would not and could not support that happening in the United States.

So, why did he retire? First of all, he is pledging to do everything he can to prevent trump from running in 2024. However, because of constant threats against him, including a primary attempt by the trumpists to unset him, he has decided that it is safer for him to retire.

I am sorry that he is doing so. I know that Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney will also face attempts by the extremist in the trumpist camp to unset them, but they have felt and stated that it is their moral imperative to continue to fight anyway. Now, I have no real love for either Cheny or Kinzinger on any other issue…they are sadly too conservative for me to ever consider voting for…I am a liberal democrat and proud of it, however, at least we have those two standing firm on that ONE issue, and I have to applaud them. I am sad that Gonzalez is retiring, but he needs to do what is best for himself and his family and with the out of control trumpist running rampant in the streets and on various social media making threats, he may just have chosen the right path for himself…at least the safest.

So once again, we have a retiring Republican speaking truth to power…would that there were more able to stay and fight but I guess for most that would take both moral backbone AND too much bravery..
