I have an interesting story to tell that is directly related to this issue. One of my absolute best friends is a drag queen that bartends at one of the bars I have hung out with since years before I moved to New Orleans.
Anyway, she brought up this devision to me and said that her brother is a preacher and the last time she was talking to him, she inquired as to if she would be welcome in his congregation. He assured her that "while his congregation would not, other Methodists Churches would".
She claims at that point all she said back was "ok", but she continued in her conversation to me, that it was so bloody hypocritical because she knew some things about his personal sex life.
Hypocrisy is a thing in religion just like it is in politics.
